Te Taiao o Tamaki Exhibition Highlights 2017 from SchoolTV on Vimeo.
Last Wednesday all schools within Manaiakalani came together to celebrate and share their learning about Te Taiao o Tāmaki. Here are some highlights of the amazing day at Te Oro. Can you spot the bird feeders created by Team 4'?
Special thanks to Mrs Lagitupu for putting together the video.

Cleaning up our environment
As ANZAC Day falls in the holidays, the plan was for the whole school to clean up Point England Beach today by giving an hour of our time to support Serve for NZ. With Cyclone Cook on the way, it wasn't a great day to head to the beach to clean up our local environment! Instead we did an amazing job of cleaning up our school environment before the holidays. Ka mau te wehi, Rooms 9 and 10! The beach clean-up will happen later.

Sketching Te Taiao o Tāmaki
Te Taiao o Tāmaki is home to a variety of native birds, fish, plants and trees. Whether walking or playing at Omaru Creek or Pt England beach, there are many things to look at, watch and explore. We decided to sketch some of the birds and other things we have seen in our local environment. We needed to think about making our object look big enough on the paper and lightly drawing circles to begin to create the shape of a bird before adding any detail.

Maui and the sun - by Hunter
Hunter Maui and the Sun from Team 4 Pes on Vimeo.
Once upon a time in Aotearoa the sun went too fast across the sky. The people were not happy because they couldn't get their work done but there was a man called Maui who was a legend. Maui could save the world with his magic hook. Maui went to catch the sun. He lassoed the sun with his hook. He hit the sun until the sun promised to move across the sky slowly. Now the sun moves slowly across the sky.

Animation Writing and Voice Over - by Ben
Maui went out fishing when the sun was out on his waka. Then it turned dark and Maui was still paddling, then morning came and he smelled the air and then he threw his hook into the ocean. Well Maui was waiting then he fell asleep. The ropes started moving then Maui woke up and started pulling the rope. A big stingray came up and it looked like the shape of NZ. If you're kill the fish then you will be killing mother nature you have to keep the creeks clean and the seas and the oceans then people will go fishing because there will be fishes to catch in the ocean.

Kaitiaki: watching over everything
We are learning about Te Taiao o Tāmaki and we were shocked by the sewage and pollution we saw in the Omaru Creek. As we are all guardians, we decided that we could keep a watch over everything from Room 9: Kaitīakitanga i nga wā kātoa.

Omaru Creek - by Sonnia
First of all we had walked with a buddy to the Omaru creek in our literacy line.
It was so smelly that I had to block my nose with my t-shirt and I couldn't breath properly. We had to kneel down and have a look at the sewage water it looked very disgusting and had a dark blue black color. Later on we had got up and had a little tiny walk. We had got in our line in our two buddies and walked back. My buddy was Zamera.

Kaitīakitanga i nga wā kātoa
We are learning about the environment in the Tāmaki area and how we can be responsible guardians of everything around us. We walked over to the Omaru Creek in Point England Reserve to check out for ourselves the pollution caused by a sewage leak into the water.
