Robot Rampage - by Leah

Every weekend there was one job Hemi hated doing: mowing the lawns, He’d much rather be building his latest robot invention in the shed. That was it! What if Hemi could build a robot to mow the lawns? Hemi dad told hemi that the lawns had to be mowed this weekend and his big sister told him to do it but he said no. So Hemi had stayed up all night looking for some tools to make a robot so that hemi doesn't need to mow the lawns. Once Hemi had finished the robot he took the robot out of the shed and made it work and the robot had started to work and then it had mowed the lawn and hemi fell asleep and while the robot was finished mowing the lawn hemi woke up and the robot was gone.

Hemi was so scared that the robot might of going somewhere far away from the house so hemi was so furious so hemi had done the biggest scream so his sister came out of the house and “said why did you scream” and he said nothing so he was so quiet so is dad came out with a suitcase with something inside. So Hemi asked his dad what is inside the suitcase but the dad had annoyed hemi. So the sister was laughing at Hemi then Hemi started crying and he told the sister that he didn’t like it. So he told the mum so hemi told the mum if she had seen a robot and the mum said yes and it just went past. So Hemi was following the track where the robot was going so he found it and the lawns was still not finished because he had forgotten the backyard so hemi was angry and so when it got to saturday Hemi dad ask if he had finish mowing the lawns. So hemi was trying not to lie but he said yes so hemi dad went to the backyard and when hemi dad was so angry because hemi dad needed the lawns to be short because hemi dad family is going to have a party. So Hemi was angry that he didn’t find the robot but when he got in his mum and dad room the robot was on the bed sitting down. So hemi was so so so proud that he had found the robot and then hemi took it outside and pressed the button so that it can mow the lawns and once it was finished the backyard the dad came out of the house to see if the backyard lawn was mowed. Next hemi dad paid him 200 dollars because hemi really wanted to get a playstation but it cost 200 dollars so hemi had gone to buy it…..

Kiwi Kapers

On Wednesday all the Year 5 students went to the Aotea Centre to watch a concert by the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. Acrobats from the Dust Palace performed mime and tricks while the music was played.

We have been imagining what it would be like to be a musician or acrobat at this event.

Here is Elizah's writing:

I am an acrobat I will be using a cyr wheel. And a hand balancing because it looks cool when we look from the audience. But on wednesday we went to the  theatre to perform for some schools. When I looked from the front I felt nervous because there was heaps of kids. I was balancing on the stands.  I tried to not look at the audience because I felt nervous in case I failed. The music helped me focus. I completed my tricks and I felt happy. I was tired after when I did my tricks.

Here is Jazzelle's writing:

At kiwi kapers i was the conductor that had to tell the band to play so i waved my stick so the band can play and then when i stopped waving my stick the band stopped playing then i waved it gently so the violin can play then i waved the stick at the double bass to play then the school and people started cheering at us then when i finished i said to all of the band to play then i finished it off with the violin then they all stand up even with me we said thanks for visiting the kiwi kapers and also said thanks for coming to watch us and then we bailed and went off stage.

Making pan pipes

It was musical madness in Room 9 yesterday morning! Everyone got the opportunity to make pan pipes using straws, cardboard and sticky tape.  Once we had checked out the sounds we could make, we enjoyed writing about the experience. Here is Shania's writing:

Duffy would be proud!

Yes, Duffy would have been so proud if he had come across Room 9 this morning. SSR in the sunshine! While our library monitors finished off their jobs, it was wonderful to catch everyone engrossed in their latest library books before we returned to class. Ka mau te wehi!

My astronaut suitcase - by Trinity O

Walt:  write our ideas using complex sentences.

Description: This was my suit case of my stuff I am going to take to space
and somethings that describe it. I also wrote things that are important to take and that are things that you can do if you are board.

Description: This activity was to do sentences about what you should take to space in a suit case. We also had to write sentences about complex sentences of why you might need them. We had to do one sentence for each  word.

What is a solar eclipse?

Screenshot 2017-08-22 at 10.31.13.png
Introduction

A solar eclipse happened in America this week. It turned dark in the middle of the day.

Paragraph 1

What i know about the sun and the moon is that the moon was in front of the sun .  So the  moon stopped the light coming to earth.  Then the sun came back out.and it was daylight again.

Paragraph 2

This happens because the earth orbits the sun and the moon orbits the earth..

Conclusion

The next total eclipse in new zealand will be on 22nd july 2028.

How things changed over time - by Farah

A long time ago people use to walk instead of taking cars. People used animals to go place. People used boats to go across the water. People had wheel’s for things that needs wheel’s. People used carriages and horses for going places. People had large ships for the water. Trains had been for the railways.

Making a paper helicopter - by Farah

First of all to make a helicopter is to have 3 or 2 paper clips, Scissors and a paper. Then you cut the solid lines and don’t cut the dotted lines. After that you fold one piece in the front and one at the back and do it on the other side . Next you put one paperclip on the paper so when you're done you throw you’re  helicopter up also watch it fly down.

Dictation race!

On your marks, get set, go! We raced off to read the short story while our buddies waited with their Chromebooks at the ready. They had to type up the words that we told them. It was tricky reading and remembering all the words. There was lots of walking backwards and forwards between the reading station and our buddies because we had to tell them how to punctuate the sentences too. We did an awesome job of listening to each other and working together.

Maui and the sun - by Hunter

Hunter Maui and the Sun from Team 4 Pes on Vimeo.

Once upon a time in Aotearoa the sun went too fast across the sky. The people were not happy because they couldn't get their work done but there was a man called Maui who was a legend. Maui could save the world with his magic hook. Maui went to catch the sun. He lassoed the sun with his hook. He hit the sun until the sun promised to move across the sky slowly. Now the sun moves slowly across the sky.

Animation Writing and Voice Over - by Ben

Maui went out fishing when the sun was out on his waka. Then it turned dark and Maui was still paddling, then morning came and he smelled the air and then he threw his hook into the ocean. Well Maui was waiting then he fell asleep. The ropes started moving then Maui woke up and started pulling the rope. A big stingray came up and it looked like the shape of NZ. If you're kill the fish then you will be killing mother nature you have to keep the creeks clean and the seas and the oceans then people will go fishing because there will be fishes to catch in the ocean.

About camp - by Shania

It was year 5 and 6 camp for three days.  We stayed on the grass at school. We slept  for 2 nights in a tent.  It was fun sleeping in the tent but it was hard to go sleep because too many people around us were talking. We were split into groups.  I was in the Generals.  With the Generals we practised our concert item. We went kayaking at the beach. I was afraid to go in the water but then I wasn’t because I got on a kayak. It was fun. We played with the rollerblades and scooters. I played table tennis and basketball.  We were against the Captains at Killer Zone.  We threw the water balloons at the other team. The Captains won the first round and we won the second round. We went to Mangere Pools on Friday. When we first hopped into the pool  I was cold but then I went out and went back in again.  It felt nice the next time when I dived under the water.

My highlight was dancing at the concert.  We made a dance to the song We are one (Ole Ola).

Thank you to Mr Somerville, Miss Timmi and Mrs Buchanan and the rest of the teachers who helped us at camp.  Even some parents helped at the pools.

At camp I learnt to try new things and not be scared of new things like kayaking.
